Parvo Nightmare

Organized by Critter Crossings Corp

The need for help continues

We have set up registries for all of the supplies that were destroyed in an effort to eliminate cross contamination and exposure to our dogs. Twenty nine rescue dogs currently live at CC NorCal and they have no beds right now.... we are working hard to treat the five that are still ill with Parvovirus, one with another medical issue not related to parvo.

We are focusing on our veterinary bills to keep the treatment going and do not have extra funds for the 40 beds that were burned and destroyed (hopefully along with the virus). Our general fund normally covers food, supplies, treats, beds and toys... our general fund is depleted due to escalating vet bills...

Day 9 - one more patient
6 month old Sissy, rescue transfer last month with one set of vaccines - revaccinated but apparently too late

Beginning treatment this morning

Day 6 of Grant's Treatment

After five day course of fluids and penicillin injections Grant was gently introduce to food yesterday.

So far so good with no vomiting, but also no stool sample to example.

He was offered oral fluids, but drank hesitantly.

He is not through the woods and needs to remain isolated for a minimum of one more week.

but this is GOOD news and I owe it to you all to share.

Day 8 - Morning Update

Heather just left us after morning rounds and here's the latest:

Rolfie good - gave him his penicillin injection and pain meds, checked bandage - eating and drinking

Fed Grant and he is keeping it down - no poop yet, and not vomiting - he has a hard patch on his neck and now the fluids are sprouting out of his skin like a broken balloon :(

Fido threw up this morning and is being started on penicillin

Louie is still not himself but no diarrhea, continue penicillin injections

Callie is the same, not eating, not drinking, continue penicillin injections and fluids

Sally & Sissy seem hot to me, but poop is normal and they're still drinking (discovered that they are both approaching their first heat, but no spay surgeries until we get through parvo crisis)

Goose threw up his dinner last night and is being started on penicillin

** We are writing letters, sending emails and networking through our rescue forums for financial assistance - we are going to drown from this building debt and SO MANY of you have helped, it is truly humbling ***

*PLEASE KEEP REPOSTING IN THE HOPES THAT A PHILANTHROPIC ANIMAL LOVER WILL CATCH WIND OF OUR NEED - EVEN A LOAN WOULD BE A BLESSING AT THIS TIME*

please also visit Bow Wow Bid Now and see how hard our volunteers are working to keep fresh auctions going and offer donated items to help us keep our (financial) heads above water
Day & Morning Update
Heather just left... will be back tonight

Stella is being cremated at Madi's request

Louie tested negative but is vomiting and not eating but drinking - he is on a ten day course of penicillin

Callie Sue is negative but vomiting and drinking minimal amounts - she is on ten day course of penicillin, twice daily fluids

Grant continues to improve but is close to emaciated (maybe 3pounds now). His only source of nutrition right now is fluids. He isthree days into his treatment and still screaming with the injections(this is GOOD). He is in Jacob's room for his isolation so he isgetting lots of warmth and love. He had solid poop last night but witha tinge of blood. Not out of the woods, but not a candidate foreuthanasia either

Fido is refusing food this morning, yet has been exposed to and lived through Parvo five times in his six years.

Rolfieate this morning but has been on penicillin since yesterday... due tothe chaos of the parvo outbreak and not being prompt in getting him infor his cast change (which was due on Monday) he chewed his cast into athread which has cut through his skin a the top of his leg. He is onantibiotics, pain medications and Heather changed his cast last night. He is also on topical antibiotics, alternating with MediHoney.

Clifford ate yesterday and is still being cared for at the vet'soffice. His white blood cell count is still high and doc has him ontwo types of antibiotics while we try to figure out what is causing theapparent infection. He was full of coccida (most likey from theshelter where the dogs drink out of the drains) and is being treatedfor that as well. It appears he has missed the primary exposure toparvo but cannot be vaccinated until he is well. His bill is well over$1100 at this point.

Everyone else is isolated on concrete, in kennels and being walkedout to pee, poop and back into crates. We are bleaching anddisinfecting, have outdoor shoes and indoor shoes now and my hands andfeed are raw and bloody from constant contact with bleach (not tomention my dwindling wardrobe).

I believe we are through the first exposure and at this point willbe dealing with cross contamination exposure as well as the fact thatGoose brought in another source of exposure from SPCA, LA where thereis a parvo outbreak.

There are to be no new dogsat our house for at least two years so I gave the kids the choice thatif there is someone at the rescue they would like to have forever, theymay do so. That this is it for awhile.

Adoptions out of NorCal are set back to lockdown again today by 21 days due to Stella's death.

Atthis point I expect the following dogs to contract parvo due tosecondary exposure and lack of vaccinations (due to health or age):
Maude
Berenice
Goose
Sally
Sissy

Iam no where close to this nightmare ending. Madi is crushed and ourfamily is mourning today so if I don't respond today, please be patientwith us. Kellee and Karen are capable of handling any emergencysituations.
Day 6

Evening Update:

Rolfie ate very little tonight and his poop has "the smell" but he's had two injections of penicillin today

Stella has stopped pooping blood and is still vomiting but no blood, she is growing very tired of being poked and let me know this morning and tonight... she has to be muzzled for treatment with two people doing the injections : (

Grant is still improving but I saw blood in his stool again this evening

Louie has had two injections of penicillin today for a total of 24 ccs... he did not eat today at all

Callie Sue's spirits are good and did not vomit today but did not choose to eat and I have not seen her drink water. She had a liter of fluids tonight and 12 ccs of penicillin

I picked up the Tamiflu that I had left at the vet for Clifford

Clifford is being cared for by Heather, vet tech, and DID EAT TODAY... that's a BIG improvement. Still negative for parvo but not through the incubation period. He will not be returning to the ranch so he'll either remain in boarding til this clears or until he is well enough to be vaccinated twice, 30 days apart then return.

At this rate we will need more Tamiflu by Tuesday (first pre
status... it is painful and heartwrenching

Vet Just Left
Heather, our vet tech from the local vet office, just left after administering fluids for Grant. He has had one dose of Tamiflu and actually ate kibble tonight... He IS screaming in his isolation crate which is a VERY GOOD sign.

We just got word that a puppy who was adopted prior to the positive results and death of one of the Foxhounds is in the hospital for parvo as well.

We refunded the adoption donation in full to help this family pay for and fight for their brand new baby. This has to be a strong strain of Parvo, or a new strain, as that 12 week old puppy was vaccinated three times.

We are nowhere near out of the woods... thank you for the contributions... we'll keep fighting, please just help us keep spreading the word.
